Sheeted dyke complex

Sheeted dyke complex

A sheeted dyke complex is a normal component of an ophiolite, a piece of oceanic crust that has been emplaced within a sequence of continental rocks [ [http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=SsZR_zsqQWsC&pg=PA70&lpg=PA70&dq=%22sheeted+dyke+complex%22+definition&source=web&ots=RCq-nYzPr7&sig=NXO8_nOZVf6BK9ysSN5vEaLhpDo&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=10&ct=result] Condie,K.C. 1997, Plate tectonics and crustal evolution.(4th edition),Butterworth-Heinamann 288p.] . The dykes act as feeders for the overlying sequence of extrusive rocks typically pillow lavas, together forming layer 2 of the oceanic crust. As each injection of a dyke represents one increment of seafloor spreading, each dyke is normally intruded into earlier dykes. The dykes are typically dolerites but plagiogranites (trondhjemites) often form a significant part of the complex.
