Al-Nouri Mosque

Al-Nouri Mosque

Al-Nouri Mosque, ( _ar. جامع النوري الكبير) also called "The Grand Mosque", is a mosque in Homs, Syria. Its site is believed to be the location of the Sun Temple in ancient Emesa. When the Muslim armies took over Homs it was the site of St. John Church, half of which was turned into a mosque. After a local rebellion in the times of the Abbasides the part that housed the church was added to the mosque. Nur ad-Din Mahmud ibn-Zengi ordered it rebuilt in 1129 AD upon its destruction by an earthquake.
