Alabama's Tommy Lewis, without putting on his helmet, jumped off the bench and tackled Maegle. Seeing what happened, the referee Cliff Shaw awarded the touchdown, and Rice went on to win the game.cite web|url=http://www.ricefootball.net/collegeinnwtstory.htm|title=Refs didn't Cotton to off-bench stop|last=Heller|first=Dick|date=
