updated =February 17 ,2008 Shayne Burgess (born
June 1 ,1964 inHastings ) is an English darts player who is one of the few examples of players that has switched from theBritish Darts Organisation to theProfessional Darts Corporation and back - he announced his intention to return to the BDO in early 2007, but remains a competitor in the PDC. He uses the nickname The Bulldog for his matches.Early career
Burgess reached the quarter finals of the British Open in 1992 and the quarter-finals of the
Winmau World Masters in 1993. He made his television debut at the 1994 Embassy World Darts Championship but suffered a 0-3 first round defeat to Steve McCollum. He promptly switched to the PDC (then known as the WDC), which was still in its early days. He appeared at the first World Matchplay Championship in the summer of 1994, losing in the semi-finals to Larry Butler.PDC World Championship performances
He made his PDC World Championship debut in 1995, but lost both of his group matches and it wasn't until he beat
Cliff Lazarenko at the 1996 PDC World Championship that he managed to notch his first victory in the event. It still wasn't enough to see him qualify for the quarter-finals. He finally made it through the group stages in the 1998 World Championship, but lost his quarter-final 0-4 toPhil Taylor .In 1999, Burgess enjoyed his best run in the PDC World Championship by reaching the semi-final beating
Rod Harrington on the way. He lost narrowly 4-5 toPeter Manley for a place in the world final.Dennis Priestley then edged Burgess out 5-4 at the quarter-final stage in 2000.Burgess was seeded third for the 2001 World Championship, but went out 0-3 in the first round to
Roland Scholten and Phil Taylor put him out in the second round in 2002. Another first round defeat to Scholten in 2003 was his last appearance at the Circus Tavern as he failed to qualify for the tournament in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.Other PDC events
Burgess has an excellent record in the major PDC tournaments. He reached the semi-finals of the first ever World Matchplay in 1994. He later reached three major finals, the World Grand Prix in 1999 and 2000 and the UK Open in 2003 - losing to
Phil Taylor on all three occasions.He also picked up the 1998 Boston Witch City Open (all three events), 1998 Yorkshire Classic Open, 1999 Omagh Invitational Charity Tournament and the 2000 German Open & Northern Ireland Open titles.
He also made a semi-final appearance at the 1998 World Grand Prix and the quarter-finals of the 1999 World Matchplay. But his form did deteriorate dramatically, and he suffered one of the rare 10-0 whitewashes at the 2002 World Matchplay to Phil Taylor and other than his resurgant performance at the 2003 UK Open, he has failed to maintain his impact on the PDC circuit. His last appearance at the World Championship came in 2003. His world ranking, which once reached number two in the world fell outside the top 100 and in January 2007, it was confirmed that he had rejoined the BDO circuit - but has since rescinded the decision and competed at the qualifiers for the 2008 PDC World Championship where he came within two wins of making it to the Alexandra Palace event.
