A large private school, Suncoast Christian College, and its associatedChristian Outreach Centre is located by the juncture of the Kiel Mountain road and the old Bruce Highway. Australian evangelist PastorPeter Foxhall lived with his family on an abandoned pineapple farm on Kentish Road, Kiel Mountain for some years.Named after Henry August Keil (correct spelling) who settled on the eastern slopes in 1880. Kiel Mountain is often mistakenly referred to as Kiels Mountain.
Kiel Mountain school was built on land near the corner of Preston and Diddillibah Roads, between Woombye and Diddillibah. It opened on 23 September 1918 and closed on 15 April 1962.

7 December 2003 a 14-year-old boy namedDaniel Morcombe disappeared while waiting for a bus on theBruce Highway near the Kiel Mountain Road overpass. No trace of him has ever been found, despite a concerted media campaign by his parents and the Queensland police.References
