footnotes =Linda B. Buck, Ph.D., (born
January 29 ,1947 ) is an Americanbiologist best known for her work on theolfactory system . She was awarded the 2004Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine , along withRichard Axel , for their work onolfactory receptor s.In their landmark paper published in 1991, Buck and Axel cloned olfactory receptors, showing that they belong to the family of
G protein-coupled receptor s. By analyzingrat DNA , they estimated that there were approximately one thousand differentgene s for olfactory receptors in themammal iangenome . This research opened the door to the genetic and molecular analysis of the mechanisms ofolfaction . In their later work, Buck and Axel have shown that eacholfactory receptor neuron remarkably only expresses one kind of olfactory receptor protein and that the input from all neurons expressing the same receptor is collected by a single dedicated glomerulus of theolfactory bulb .Born in
Seattle, Washington , Buck received her B.S. inpsychology andmicrobiology in 1975 from theUniversity of Washington , Seattle and her Ph.D. inimmunology in 1980 from theUniversity of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas . She did herpost-doctoral work atColumbia University under Axel. Her primary research interest is on howpheremone s andodor s are detected in the nose and interpreted in the brain. She is also studying the mechanisms underlying aging and the lifespan of "C. elegans ". She is a Full Member of the Basic Sciences Division atFred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center , an Affiliate Professor ofPhysiology andBiophysics at theUniversity of Washington , Seattle and an Investigator of theHoward Hughes Medical Institute . She was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 2004.References
