Bible Tower

The Bible Tower, is the tallest church tower in Asia. It was inaugurated on January 7th, 2007. The tower, which is about 260 feet tall, is situated in Thrissur, Kerala, India. The foundation stone of the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours was laid on 21st December 1929, by Mar Francis Vazhappilly, the Late Bishop of Thrissur. When the church was built, two bell towers in the front of the church were also included at 42.672 meters (140 feet). Another bell tower in the back of the church reaches 79.248 meters (260 feet). The reconstruction of the bell tower started in 2002 when the Auxiliary Bishop of Thrissur Mar, Andrews Thazhath, was the Rector of the Basilica. Reverend Dr. Pedro Lopez Quintana was also present for the function and dedicated the Bible Tower for World Peace.

The 210-foot tall tower has facilities for viewing the city over an area of 18 kilometers. A passenger lift is available up to 48.768 meters (160 feet), where a viewers' platform has been made to accommodate up to 250 people. The viewers have to climb the steps from there to the top of the tower. The building has been certified as earthquake-proof by officials of the Geology Department of India. The red cross on the top of the Bible Tower is lit to "show the presence of the Roman Catholic Church in Thrissur." It can be seen from anywhere in the town.
