March 22 ,1942 ,Eugene, Oregon ) is a retiredAmerican football coach. von Appen is known for his head coaching stint with the University of Hawaii at Mnoa from 1996-1998 and for serving as an assistant coach on a number ofNFL and college coaching staffs.von Appen began his coaching career in 1964 at his at his alma mater, Linfield College in Oregon. He earned a master’s degree in secondary education at Linfield in 1965. Von Appen was a linebacker and guard who was a three-time all-conference selection at Linfield. He was briefly in the
San Diego Chargers camp in 1964.After leaving Linfield, von Appen served in the
U.S. Army before resuming his coaching career at Arkansas in 1969. He was at UCLA in 1970, Virginia Tech in 1971, Oregon from 1972-76 and the first of four stints at Stanford from 1977-78.After spending two seasons in Green Bay under head coach
Bart Starr , von Appen returned to Arkansas in 1981, where he was the defensive line coach underLou Holtz . He then went back to Stanford in 1982. Bill Walsh then brought Von Appen to theSan Francisco 49ers staff from 1983-88, where his duties included special teams.In 1989, von Appen returned to Stanford as the defensive coordinator under head coach
Dennis Green . From 1990-91, von Appen was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at theUniversity of Pittsburgh . When Bill Walsh became Stanford’s head coach he brought von Appen back as defensive coordinator. Von Appen was the defensive line coach at Colorado before becoming the head coach at the University of Hawaii. Von Appen was fired as head coach for the University of Hawaii in 1999 after a disastrous zero win season.von Appen spent the 2000 season as the defensive line coach for the
Minnesota Vikings and the 2001 season as the special teams coach for theNew York Giants . von Appen retired after the 2001 season, but came out of retirement to serve as the defensive ends coach and assistant head coach for theUniversity of Montana . von Appen served on the Montana coaching staff until he retired for good after the 2003 season.College Record
