Noel Mary Purcell (born either December 25 1899 [ [http://www.databaseolympics.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=PURCENOE01 www.databaseolympics.com] ] or November 14 1891 [ [http://www.irishrugby.ie/227_7678.php?includeref=dynamic&player=24319 www.irishrugby.ie] ] ; died January 31, 1962) is a former Irish sportsman. He represented both Great Britain and Ireland as a water polo player at the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics respectively. He also played rugby union for both Belvedere College [ [http://www.belvederecollege.ie/Rugby%20Heroes.html www.belvederecollege.ie] ] and Ireland.

Water polo player

At the 1920 Summer Olympics Purcell, together with Charles Sydney Smith, Paul Radmilovic, Charles Bugbee, Christopher Jones, William Peacock and William Henry Dean, was a member of the Great Britain water polo team that won the gold medal [ [http://waterpoloideas.blogspot.com/2008/03/1920-antwerp-golden-team-of-england.html Purcell with Great Britain team] ] [ [http://www.uissf.org/journal/olympics.html One Hundred Years of Irish Olympians] ] . Then in 1924 he captained the Ireland water polo team.

Rugby international

In the 1921 Five Nations Championship, Purcell played in all four games for Ireland. He made his debut against England on February 12. He then played against Scotland on February 26 and Wales on March 12. He made his final appearance for Ireland against France on April 9 [ [http://www.irishrugby.ie/227_7678.php?includeref=dynamic&player=24319 www.irishrugby.ie] ] .
