- Singapore League Cup
The Singapore League Cup is an annual soccer competition in
Singapore . It was launched in2007 , and is open to teams who play in theS.League .The 2007 competition was sponsored by
SingTel , and officially titled the SingTel League Cup. Eight of the tweleve S.League teams took part in the 2007 tournament, which concluded one week before the S.League season began, and thus functioned as a pre-season warm-up event for the teams involved. The winners of the 2007 event wereWoodlands Wellington FC , who defeatedSengkang Punggol FC 4-0 in the final. A third-place match was also held between the two teams who lost in the semi-finals, and was won byGombak United FC who defeatedHome United FC 9-8 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.In
2008 , the competition's official sponsored name is the Avaya-J&J League Cup (with sponsorship coming fromAvaya and Jebsen & Jessen Communications). All twelve S.League teams are taking part in the 2008 tournament. Unlike the 2007 event, the 2008 competition is being held during the S.League season instead of being a pre-season tournament.Past results
Previous League Cup tournament (1997)
A competition called the Singapore League Cup was also held in Singapore in
1997 . In that year it was won by theSingapore Armed Forces Football Club who defeatedGeylang United FC 1-0 in the final. In1998 , that competition was renamed theSingapore Cup , and was opened to teams that do not play in the S.League. The Singapore Cup is now the major cup competition in Singapore football, and in recent years has involved invited teams from overseas in addition to teams playing in Singapore's local leagues.ee also
