William Walsh (Bishop)

William Walsh (1836-1918) was a former Bishop of Mauritius [The Times, Tuesday, Oct 19, 1897; pg. 4; Issue 35338; col B "Bishop of Mauriius to return to Canterbury"] and Dover [”Who was Who 1897-1990” London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] . Born in 1836 and educated at Merton College, Oxford, he began his ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Horsell and was successively Vicar of St Matthew Newington, Secretary of the Church Missionary Society and a Prebendary of St Paul's Cathedral [During which time he wrote "Progress of the Church in London"(1887)] before his elevation to the episcopate.
