Vanney played soccer for
Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, Arizona, and led the team to three consecutive state championship titles in 1990, 1992, and 1992. Vanney holds the school record for most assists by one player in a season with 13 for the 1990-1991 season, and also holds the school record for most goals by one player in a single season with 33 goals for the 1991-1992 season. He was also named the 5A player of the year for the 1991-1992 season. Greg Vanney playedcollege soccer forFlorida International University in 1992, and forUCLA from 1993 to 1995. He was drafted 17th overall in the
1996 MLS College Draft by theLos Angeles Galaxy . Vanney played for the Galaxy for six years, from 1996 to 2001, and was consistently one of the best defenders in MLS, leading the Galaxy to twoMLS Cup Finals, as well as being named to theMLS Best XI in both 2000 and 2001. After the 2001 MLS season, Vanney signed a contract withSC Bastia in the French First Division, with whom he had limited success, struggling to secure a consistent spot on the left flank. He left the club in 2005, coming back to MLS and signing withFC Dallas . After two seasons with the Hoops, he was traded to Colorado onJanuary 12 ,2007 . On 06/29/07 Vanney was traded from the Rapids to D.C. United. Vanney was also an MLS All-star in 2000, 2005, and 2006.cite web

Vanney has also been a useful player for the United States national team, debuting
December 21 ,1996 against Guatemala, and having played 37 games and scored one goal (as of September 2005). He was originally named as an alternate for the2002 FIFA World Cup but initially replaced the injured Chris Armas on the roster after the midfielder picked up an ACL injury in a warm-up friendly against Uruguay on May 12, 2002. Vanney picked up an injury in the next warm-up friendly on May 16, 2002 against Jamaica and was replaced on the roster by Steve Cherundolo. Vanney featured in the early part of2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying for the US, but fell out of form during the2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup and hasn't played for the national team since.ee also
