Sancha of Majorca

Sancha of Majorca

Sancha of Majorca (c. 1285 – 28 July, 1345, Naples) was the second wife but only Queen consort of Robert of Naples.

Family

She was a daughter of James II of Majorca and his Queen consort Esclaramunda of Foix.

Her paternal grandparents were James I of Aragon and Violant of Hungary. Her maternal grandparents were Roger IV of Foix and Brunissenda of Cardona.

Marriage

In July, 1304, Sancha married Robert of Naples. He was the eldest surviving son of Charles II of Naples and Maria Arpad of Hungary. He was about twenty-seven years old and his first wife Yolanda of Aragon, daughter of Peter III of Aragon and Constantia of Sicily, had died in August, 1302.

Charles II died on 5 May, 1309 and Robert succeeded him. Sancha served as his Queen consort for the rest of his reign but remained childless.

On 20 January, 1343, Robert died and was succeeded by his granddaughter Joan I of Naples. Sancha became Queen Dowager and retired to a local monastery on 20 January, 1344. She died as a nun the following year.
