Gorey Community School was located in Gorey County Wexford, Ireland. It is the largest school in Ireland with almost 1700 students.

Background and History

Gorey Community School was established in 1993, following the amalgamation of the Loreto, Vocational and CBS schools.

It now has a student population of over 1600 and a teaching staff of more than 100.

The school occupies a large site of almost 20 acres (81,000 m2) which comprises playing fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts. In 2000 a new extension was opened. The construction of a second extension began in September 2007 and was completed in October 2008. There are now over 90 classrooms including numerous specialist rooms and a large gymnasium. Through many years of fund raising an oratory was built in 2003 with seating for over 200 people.

GCS is managed by a Board of Management, which includes 6 representatives from the trustees ( the V.E.C., the Loreto order and the C.B.S), 2 teachers representatives and 2 parents representatives).

Overcrowding

Gorey town has experienced enormous growth in recent years causing overcrowding in the school.

A new secondary school for the town has been promised by Mary Hanafin, Minister for Education, which may ease the pressure on Gorey Community School. However, where to locate this school had caused considerable debate. It will now be located near the Carnew Road in the town.

Additional classrooms have now been promised in 2010 for Gorey Community School by Education Minister Mary Coughlan in exchange for the school taking an additional 45 first year students. In addition, the planned new school for the town is due to take enrolments from 2011.
