Alan Rabinowitz

Dr. Alan Rabinowitz (born 1953) is an American zoologist born in New York City, U.S., and is currently the President and CEO of Panthera [http://www.panthera.org] , a New York City based conservation organization dedicated to range wide conservation of the world's wild cat species.

Discovery of a new species

While working in Myanmar's Hukawng Valley in 1997, Rabinowitz became the first to document the existence of the Leaf muntjac "(Muntiacus putaoensis)", which belongs to the Cervid family.

Legacy

An extensive traveler, his main research efforts have taken place in throughout Asia and Central America.He helped to establish the Hukawng Valley Tiger Reserve in Myanmar [ [http://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/0512/features/alan_rabinowitz.html Alan Rabinowitz's Fight of His Life] , National Geographic, 2006] and his work there also led to the creation of the country’s first marine national park and first Himalayan national park. His work in Taiwan resulted in the establishment of the country’s largest nature reserve and in Thailand he was instrumental in establishing the first field research on Indochinese tigers in what was to become the region’s first World Heritage Site.
