Kentucky , [cite web|url=http://www.harlan.k12.ky.us/hchs/abouthchs.html |title=About HCHS |publisher=Harlan County High School |accessdate=2008-09-28] a small rural community in the southeastern mountain region of the state. The school, served by the post office of Baxter, lies between Harlan and Cumberland.Opened in August 2008, HCHS is the product of consolidation of the three exisiting county high schools:
* "James A. Cawood High School" was located just outside of Harlan, and had been created in 1966 from the merger of Hall, Loyall, and Wallins High Schools. The school served the southern and western portions of the county, as well as the northern (Bledsoe) area, and its nickname was the Trojans. The building (pictured below) is now the site of the former Hall Middle School.
*"Evarts High School", located in Evarts, was created in 1938 and served Evarts and the Clover Fork community, including the communities of Ages, Closplint, Dizney, Holmes Mill, Kenvir, Shields and Verda. Its nickname was the Wildcats.
* "Cumberland High School", located in Cumberland, was also created in 1938 and later included the school systems for Benham and Lynch, as well as students in the eastern portion of the county along northU.S. Highway 119 . Its teams were nicknamed Redskins. The mascot for HCHS was provisionally to be called the "Knights", but public opinion led to the changing of the name of the athletic teams to the "Black Bears", in honor of the "Ursus americanus" bears that populate the area. The school is the flagship of the Harlan County Public Schools, whose superintendent is Tim Saylor.
