Senegalese constitutional referendum, 2001

Senegalese constitutional referendum, 2001

The Senegalese constitutional referendum was held on 7 January, 2001 to approve a new constitution for Senegal. It was the third referendum since Senegal became independent and resulted in an overwhelming yes vote. The vote paved the way for early parliamentary elections to take place in April 2001.

The constitutional reform abolished the Senate of Senegal, which had only come into existence in 1999; its first election had been boycotted by the opposition parties, who viewed its creation as unnecessary.
