- John Hutton (footballer)
John Hutton (born 26 May 1966) was an
Australian rules football player in theVFL/AFL with theBrisbane Bears and theFremantle Football Club .Taken as #1 pick in the
1991 AFL Draft from theClaremont Football Club inWestern Australia , Hutton was touted as being a highly talentedfull-forward prospect fresh from having completed aWest Australian Football League where he had lead the league goalkicking with 100 goals. He is probably best remembered for his role kicking 8 goals in the Bears final game at
Carrara Stadium vsSydney Swans in Round 23, 1992 as well as for wearing a helmet during games for much of his playing career.Despite showing signs of his potential in his best year (1992) which including several large goal hauls (besides the previously mentioned game he also kicked 8 goals against
Geelong Football Club in round 7, 1992.Hutton won the Brisbane Bears goalkicking award in 1992 but was overshadowed in an era of champion full forwards. Hutton holds the record for most goals in a game for the Brisbane Bears (8), which was equal with the efforts of
Warwick Capper andRoger Merrett .After a disastrous year in 1993 where
Roger Merrett dominated at full-forward, patchy form and injury resulted in him being delisted by the Bears.Hutton returned to the WAFL and into some form.
In 1994, Hutton's career was revived when he was selected by the
Fremantle Football Club 's inaugural squad as part of the zoning rule to play in their debut 1995 season. He managed to equal his best haul of 8 goals in Round 6, 1995 vs Sydney Swans, but overall failed to impress.
Playing for only one season, Hutton was delisted at the end of 1995.
