The 1971 "Rainbow Bridge" film featuring Jimi Hendrix resulted in an official soundtrack release.

No music from the film was released on the 1971 Reprise 'Rainbow Bridge' LP, which was subtitled "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" for contractual reasons. The recording of the filmed concert in Maui, Hawaii, was of such poor sonic quality, caused by strong winds, that it was considered not worthy of release. Despite this, the cover was made up of stills from the film.

This release is the second posthumous release of Hendrix's studio work and contained the bulk of the remaining tracks that would become "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" and a couple of tracks to make it appear to be from the concert/film.

Bootleg live recordings of the concert floated around for three decades until the material was released in 2003 on the Radioactive Records label as a two set release, "" and "The Rainbow Bridge Concert: The Late Show". A two-CD release combining both sets was made available on the Purple Haze label and released as "The Rainbow Bridge Concert: Both Shows".

Eventually these releases were withdrawn after a court action by Experience Hendrix, which administers Hendrix's estate, although they continue to be available as bootlegs.

To date, only two or three Fact|date=February 2008 songs performed during these shows have been released officially.
