OtherCpds =Butylated hydroxytoluene Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a mixture of two
isomer ic organic compounds, 2-"tert"-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and 3-"tert"-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole. It is prepared from4-methoxyphenol andisobutylene . It is a waxy solid that exhibitsantioxidant properties.Like
butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), the conjugated aromatic ring of BHA is able to stabilizefree radical s, sequestering them. By acting as free radical scavengers, further free radical reactions are prevented. The
National Institutes of Health considers BHA "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen". E320 or Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is an additive that accumulates in the body fat. It is known to cause
cancer in animals and disrupt the body’s hormone balance. Laboratory studies have shown BHA causes cancer and results in detrimental reproductive effects in rats. [cite web | Publisher = Oxford Journals | title = Carcinogenesis, Vol. 20, No. 11, 2159-2165, Nov 1999 | url = http://carcin.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/20/11/2159] It is banned in foods for infants and young children in Australia and has been banned in Japan since 1958. Official committees of experts recommended that it be banned in the UK, however because of industry pressure it was not. McDonald's eliminated BHA from their US products in 1986 due to the harmful effects.ee also
