Current issues and controversies
Many teachers and students at Sand Creek are currently locked in a battle with the District 49 board of education regarding the use of movies in curriculum. Several parents brought the issue up during the spring of 2006 when their children felt uncomfortable and excluded as the only students who opted out of seeing a rated R movie. In December 2006, the school board developed a committee of students, parents, and teachers to tackle the issue. However, the board soon disbanded the committee and took on the issue by itself. It had yet to make a decision as of the March 2007 board meeting. Rumors have circulated that it is currently looking at two policies: one which would ban rated R movies and leave all other movies up to principal discretion, and another which would ban all movies which deal with controversial subjects. Many teachers, especially amongst the
Social Studies department, are upset due to their use of movies as part of the curriculum. One teacher said he would never be able to convey a message as powerful as a movie such as "Schindler's List " does. The issue has erupted several times during the school year in different ways.Traditional problems
Sand Creek High School has traditionally struggled with athletic success. The only state championship that the school has won was by the school's pom squad in 1997, and the Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association Novice division championship in 2007. Sand Creek was built in eastern Colorado Springs, an area which has grown tremendously throughout the past few years. Falcon School District 49 has been the fastest growing school district in the state of Colorado for several years. As such, Sand Creek has faced problems from excessive overcrowding. It has added several additions through the years, but still has more students than it was meant to hold.
