Its name means "alder wood" in Polish. It is the seat of the administrative district (gmina) called Gmina Olszyna. Prior to 1945 it was in Germany. It received its town charter in 2005.
It lies approximately 9 kilometres (6 mi) south-east of Lubań, and 116 kilometres (72 mi) west of the regional capital Wrocław. As at 2006, the town has a population of 4,786.
