Trosa is a town (pop. 4,500) in Södermanland, Sweden and the seat of Trosa Municipality, Södermanland County. 1974-1991 Trosa was in Nyköping Municipality.

Trosa is, despite its small population, for historical reasons normally still referred to as a "city". Statistics Sweden, however, only counts localities with more than 10,000 inhabitants as cities.

History

Trosa was known as a town in the 14th century. In the 15th century it was an important site for merchancy, and received its city privileges in 1454 by King Charles VIII of Sweden (a.k.a. "Karl Knutsson Bonde"). Due to land elevation, the city center was moved in the early 17th century, to its present location by the estuary of the Trosa River.

The city was burnt down and plundered by Russians in 1719, but the local church was spared by the flames.

Present

Today Trosa is one of the wealthiest communities in Sweden (16% of the population earns more than 1 million SEK a year.) Many famous people have summerhouses in or close to Trosa, for example Tommy Körberg and ABBAs Benny Andersson. The founder of Camfil Farr Gosta Larsson lived in Trosa most of his life and at the moment the Larsson-Markman family runs the company.
