Produced in 1966, Rondo was a first full-length film by a former musician and screenwriter Zvonimir Berković, screenwriter of H8, most famous Croatian 50s classic. In both films he uses musical form as a source for narrative. Like in Mozart's Rondo (which is repeatedly listened in film), in Berković's film basic situation - Sunday chess party - is repeated with small variations, slowly bringing three character toward crisis. Very formal, very intimistic and set in a cosy middle-class environment, Rondo was completely different from previous Yugoslav film tradition, introducing esthetic of the modernist psychological novel into a Croatian cinema. It is still considered as one of three biggest classics of Croatian 60s modernism.
