Konrad Rudnicki

Konrad Rudnicki (* 2 July 1926 in Warsaw) is a Polish astronomer and professor of Jagiellonian University in Kraków as well as a priest of the Mariavite Church. He is a member of the Free European Academy of Science (Holland), member of the Commission of Galaxies of the International Astronomical Union and member of the Mathematical-Astronomical Section at the Goetheanum, (Switzerland). Prof. Rudnicki has been a Senior Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology (1965-67), and a visiting professor at Rice University, USA (1988-89).

Konrad Rudnicki discovered several supernovae. One of them, found between two galaxies, was the first such discovery to be made in the history of astronomy. He also advanced a new hypothesis on the structure of galaxy clusters. His areas of interest include extragalactic astronomy, cosmology, philosophy of science and methodology of science. He was the discoverer of the comet C/1966 T1 called the "Rudnicki Comet" after him.

During World War II Rudnicki fought as a partisan in Gwardia Ludowa. While living with his mother Maria in Piotrków Trybunalski they harboured a Jewish family of Weintraubs who escaped the Holocaust.
