Arab Orthodox Society

Arab Orthodox Society

The Arab Orthodox Society is a charitable organization in Eastern Jerusalem. Their mission is to bring relief and opportunity to the people of the greater Jerusalem area, regardless of race, religion, or gender. They do this by providing medical care and employment opportunities for people in need. Historically the organization is part of the Arab Orthodox movement within the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem.

Clinic

The clinic's main goal is to provide quality medical care to people who normally couldn't afford it. Payments for services are adjusted to the patient's ability to pay. The medical staff includes an on-site x-ray technician, a full-time dentist, and various other specialists.

Employment opportunities

The employment opportunities include an embroidery shop, a bakery and coffee shop, and an internet cafe. All are located near the New Gate in the Christian Quarter of the Old City.

Embroidery

The shop [http://www.aosjerusalem.org/ "Melia Palestinian Embroidery"] provides a resource to Palestinian women from the West Bank. These women hand-embroider traditional Palestinian designs and sell the finished pieces through the shop.

Bakery and coffee shop

The bakery prepares traditional Palestinian dishes including pies, pastries, and salads. In addition to the shop itself, the employees provide catering services for parties and other celebrations. This and the embroidery shop constitute the only stores in Jerusalem staffed entirely by women.

Internet cafe

The Internet Cafe was the first of its kind in the Old City. It provides a resource for the surrounding community at a low cost.
