Theatre of Dare is a non-profit community theater group based out of
Kill Devil Hills on theOuter Banks ofNorth Carolina . They attract patrons from neighboring areas, includingKitty Hawk, North Carolina ,Nags Head ,Manteo ,Roanoke Island ,Hatteras , andCurrituck County, North Carolina .History
Theatre of Dare began in 1991 with the help of Ruth Ambrosius and Pat Clayton with the Outer Banks Forum. The first organizational meeting was held in November of that year, and along with the Dare County Arts Council, the Theatre of Dare was born. The original (and mercifully brief) name of Theatre of Dare was "Players of Truth and Dare".
Auditions for the first production, "
California Suite ", were held in January 1992 and the show was performed at the Port O'Call restaurant on March 19-22, to great acclaim. After a few locations were tried, the Theatre finally settled in the Manteo Middle School auditorium, which has since been purchased by College of the Albemarle and renamed their Roanoke Island Campus..Since these humble beginnings, Theatre of Dare has performed dozens of major plays and several second stage vignettes. Recent performances include "
Little Shop of Horrors (musical) ", "Annie ", "Fools (play) ", "The Diary of Anne Frank ", "Peter Pan (musical) ", and "No Time For Sergeants ".Their 2008-09 season will consist of "
Bell, Book and Candle (film) ", "The Gin Game ", and "Little Women " the musical.External links
