display="Strider II" is a European-made
sequel toCapcom 'sarcade game "Strider" released in vgy|1990. The game was published byU.S. Gold (under license from Capcom USA) and developed by Tiertex, and was originally released for various computer platforms (theCommodore Amiga ,Atari ST ,Commodore 64 ,Amstrad CPC andZX Spectrum ) in vgy|1990. The game was later ported to the Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System/Game Gear in vgy|1992. The Genesis and Game Gear ports were released inNorth America under the title of "Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns".Capcom was not involved in the development of "Strider Returns" other than handing the "Strider" license to U.S. Gold and "Strider II" was unreleased in Japan. Capcom later produced their own arcade sequel, "
Strider 2 ", in vgy|1999, which ignores "Strider Returns".Overview
The player must once again face off against Grandmaster Meio. This time, the objective is to rescue a
damsel in distress from Meio. The girl is identified as the Princess of Planet Magenta in the manuals for the computer ports; while in the console versions she is the main character's fiancee, Lexia. The main character himself is simply called "Strider" in the game, but is identified in the manual for the Genesis version as "Strider Hinjo" (rather thanStrider Hiryu , the actual name of the original game's protagonist)."Strider Returns" is the only Master System game to use sprite collision detection rather than collision boxes.
Reception
"Strider Returns" was poorly received among critics and fans of the original game, and is regarded as a vastly inferior game.
: "Strider Returns was a pale shadow of the arcade game, with poor control, unimaginative design and none of the brilliance that made its inspiration so compelling. Even the biggest Strider nut won't touch this one." (Jeremy Parish, 1UP.com) [http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3142487]
Capcom later produced their own sequel, "
Strider 2 ", which follows up on the original "Strider" and ignores "Strider Returns".References
