WNSS signed on in 1946 as WNDR. It was the most popular
Top 40 -format station in the area during the 1960s. The studio and 5000-watt transmitter were located on Andrews Road in DeWitt, a Syracuse suburb.Bud Ballou ,Peter C. Cavanaugh andJoey Reynolds were among the notabledisc jockey s that worked at WNDR.In 1989, the callsign changed to the current WNSS and the station's format moved to an all news format "W-News".
During the 1990s and early 2000s, the station struggled. After several format changes (including a brief and ill-fated
All Comedy Radio format), the station finally settled on its current format, a mostly straight satellite feed from theESPN Radio network, including ESPN'sMLB andNBA broadcasts. The station during most of this period was the flagship station of theSyracuse Orange along with sister stationWAQX , untilWTKW acquired the rights in 2007.External References
