Health Effects Institute

The Health Effects Institute (HEI) is a non-partisan, non-profit corporation specializing in research on the health effects of air pollution. It is headquartered in Charlestown, Massachusetts, USA.

HEI was founded in 1980 with half of its core funding coming from the automotive industry, and half from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Archibald Cox became the founding chair of the organization. Its roles are
* to identify areas of research
* to fund and manage research
* to synthesize research results
* to communicate its findings to industry, policy makers, and the public
