Photomarathon

Photomarathon

A photomarathon is a photography competition in which participants must take a series of photographs on predetermined subjects in a set period of time, typically 12 to 24 hours.

One of the first known photomarathons was organized in Copenhagen in 1989 and has run ever since. The first ever photomarathon however seems to have been organized in 1985 ( [http://photomarathon.eu/blog/2007/10/first-ever-photomarathon-in-madrid-1985.php] ) in Madrid, where no less then some 2500 photographers ran around for 24 hours, shooting 24 images. The concept slowly drifted to other cities around the continent, not unlike the way the Hash House Harriers spread over the globe and has now been organized in cities in North America, Asia and Africa.

The challenge of the event lies in its forcing creativity out of its contestants, only getting, typically, 30 or 60 minutes to shoot a new picture on an imposed theme before moving on.

Not being aware of the concept of 'photomarathons', a Russian group started organizing similar events in Moscow under the name 'photocross' in 2004.
