Rhinelander High School has a student population of 1,091 as of the 2007-08 school year and has been depleated to The student population has been diminishing due to the increasing number of students who are attending the local Charter School,the decline in new families moving to the area, along with lack of economic stability.The school shares its mascot, the
Hodag , a mythological creature, with the city. Sports teams at the school have uniforms in the school colors of kelly green, white, and black.School administration
Courses and activities
Being one of the largest high schools in the Northwoods, Rhinelander High School has a diverse range of courses including three foreign languages - Spanish, French, and German. Rhinelander has one of the best music departments in upper wisconsin. Choir and band are viewed highly by the school administration as a way to "engage students into learing." The school is known nationally for its record of the most consecutive wins in
Mock Trial , a nation-wide high school extra curricular activity where students study a court case selected by the state and then break down the case in a simulated court-of-law setting.Mock Trial at RHS is led by Ms. Kathy Vick-Martini.Rhinelander's Debate Team is also known as one of the best teams in Wisconsin. On December 8th, 2007, Rhinelander took 2nd place in The Tournament of Champions in South Milwaukee. Ryan Gittins and Joel McReynolds were the winning affirmative team, paired with Eric Kirby and David Walters, the winning negative half. They won all six of their debates, but ended up taking second due to speaker points. Rhinelander's debate team is currently led by Mrs. Angela Schaffer.
Sports
Rhinelander High School participates in the
Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and sports teams play in theWisconsin Valley Conference (WVC). Rhinelander teams participate in Division-I, with the exception of football, which at the state level is moved down to Division-II. After the 2007-2008 year, Anitgo and Merrill schools left the district, thus leaving; DC Everest, Wausau West, Wausau East, Stevens Point, and Wisconsin Rapids. Since the 2008-2009 school year, Antigo and Merrill schools left the conference to join the 'Great Northern Conference', making Rhinelander the smallest school in the WVC in terms of enrollment. Rhinelander sports include; football, soccer, swimming, wrestling, gymnastics, nordic and alpine sking, baseball, softball, track and field, volleyball, hockey, basketball, cross country, tennis, dance team, and golf.Notable alumni
