Bus incident
The school was lately known for a bus incident involving a Dunn Line bus, the company was recently taken over by a popular European company called
Veolia , but had failed to replace the Dunn Line buses as soon as they took over the school service buses. The incident in question involved the 240, a bus number which was originally from the East Yorkshire buses which travelled from Hornsea to Hull via Leven. The boy fell from the top deck from a seat at the front on the right side of the bus. It happened just outside Leven near the roundabout. The boy hit the road and managed to roll onto the grass verge to avoid oncoming traffic. It’s believed the boy was leaning against the window and went through it when the bus went round a corner without slowing down. Parents were not happy about the incident and blamed the bus company, whilst the school and the media blamed the boy involved. No clear decision has been made on whose fault it was. Parents created a petition to replace the buses with East Yorkshire buses which did the school services until September 2006. So far the only thing done after the incident was CCTV cameras installed on all buses and Veolia has tried to replace more of the old Dunn Line buses with new Veolia ones.European day of languages
This national event was celebrated in school by the Languages Faculty and a number of different subject areas who took the opportunity to explore a European theme in their lessons throughout the day.
During the day students in Years 7 and 8 participated in some very lively French and Spanish workshops run by members of the Languages’ Faculty . In these the pupils were able to improve their language skills using a range of different practical tasks.
The day ended with a very successful Family Evening which was attended by over 100 parents and students. The event took a Café Culture theme with the school Hall transformed into a large café. Parents were given a lesson in key café phrases in French, Spanish and Italian which they could take away and practise on holiday. They were then able to sample delicious regional dishes prepared by Mrs Cammidge and her team of school canteen staff with a number of students acting as waiters and waitresses.
After refreshments the entertainment included a medley of European dances by the Year 11 dance group organised by Mrs Bristowe. This was followed by some songs beautifully sung in French by Annie Hilton ( Year 10 ) accompanied by Joe Scott ( Year 13 ) all co-ordinated by Mr Hart.
At the end of the evening a quiz was provided by Mrs Dawson in which parents and students tested their knowledge of Europe and some of the language they had learnt.
