Atlantica Revista de Arte y Pensamiento

Atlantica is a contemporary art and culture magazine produced by the Centro Atlántico de Arte de Moderno (CAAM) based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in between Europe, Americas and Africa.

History

Atlantica publishes its first issue in October 1990, in Spanish. With the change in management in 1992, it becomes a four-monthly bilingual (Spanish-English) magazine; grafic changes giving images a fundamental role. Another editorial turn happens with issue 40 (2004). «Atlantica» publishes regularly three issues every year.

Concept

The location in the Canary Island, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is strategic and functional to the idea of a magazine that bridges Africa, Europa and America, making exchange and mutual updating easier. "Laying up for colonization and decolonization" points out Zaya on the occasion of the 10-year-anniversary of the magazine, "Atlantica" is, due to his origin and confession, proud of his insularity and fragmentarity, cross-cultural and forward-looking. This "tri-continental" horizon, this multi-territorial approach is translated in a dialogue, in a constant correspondence among particular realities, in a multi-cultural option where integration is neither the purpose or the central theme; it simply does not exist.Metissage, conceptual flexibility, program focus on minorities, versus the cultural and artistic standardization are the key concepts that "Atlantica" focusses on. This is a reality that not only is against a politically correct concept of art but also tries to escape from control mechanism."Atlantica" wants to be the ambassador of ignored art activities, put aside by the mainstream propaganda.

Ethic and aesthetic proposals are freely melt in the way "Atlantica" introduces itself. "Atlantica" doesn't want to be the tool through which redefine a model but a way to multiply the possibilities of its reform and denounce its obsolescence.

Content

Since 1992 Atlantica publishes critical papers, reviews, conversations, interviews and artist projects. The vocation is interdisciplinary. Not only art but also sociology and philosophy, anytime these subjects allow to throw light on more recent and complex tendencies in the field of contemporary art.

Authors

Atlantica mostly addressed and gives voice to experts in contemporary arts and culture. It works in order to open up their horizons, hosting artists' speeches and theoretical observations across continents. Among those who collaborate there are writers, magazine directors, art critics, intellectuals, i.e. Anders Michelsen, Benjamin Weil, Charles Merewether, Lliliam Llanes, Berta Sichel, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Orlando Britto Jinorio, Ery Camara, Eugenio Valdés Figueroa (since 1994 co-curator of Avana Biennale), Simon Njami, Clementine Deliss, Olu Oguibe, Okwui Enwezor, Salah Hassan, Colin Richards, Ruben Gallo, Coco Fusco, Hou Hanru, Clive Kellner, Achille Bonito Oliva, Francesco Bonami, Gerardo Mosquera, Hou Hanru, Rhaseed Araeen, Candice Breitz e Rosa Martínez. But also Bernard Henri-Levi, Slavoj Zizek, Sadie Plant, Ilya Prigogine and Sami Nair.

The first three issues were written in collaboration with Nancy Davenport, Barbara Pollak, Arthur C. Danto, Carmela Garc ía, Shoja Azari, José Ferriera, Zwelethu Mthethwa and Penny Siopis. Starting from issue 40 (2004) the magazine is published by Ediciones del Umbral and directed by Alicia Chillida, Antonio Zaya e Octavio Zaya.
