Cameron Newton is an American football quarterback for the University of Florida. Newton is back-up quarterback to star Tim Tebow, earning a spot ahead of freshman John Brantley and junior college transfer Bryan Waggener. High school

Newton is a monster of an athlete and huge pocket passer with deceptive speed and quickness. Essentially he has been described as a pocket passer with the ability to get out of trouble and make plays with his legs. His release is high and over the top from the ear. He shows good touch on underneath throws and the ability to change velocities and crank it up. He also exhibits good zip on the ball in deep routes. In 2005 Newton threw for 2500 yards and 23 touchdowns with 638 yards rushing and 9 touchdowns.

College

Newton chose Florida and Urban Meyer's spread offense over 40 other schools including Oklahoma and Mississippi State [http://florida.scout.com/2/565839.html florida.scout.com] ] . In selecting the Gators, Newton said,

"I love the University of Florida. I think that it's the best place for me to develop as a quarterback and I think my talents fit that system better than any other out there."

Newton enrolled in Florida in January 2007 and competed at spring practice.In his first career collegiate game, Newton ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a 49-3 victory over Western Kentucky, coming in to spell first-string quarterback Tim Tebow; on September 15, Cameron Newton participated in his second TD, once again scoring himself on a 3 yard rush in the 4th quarter of a game, this time against SEC rival and then-#22 University of Tennessee.

Freshman Season
