Rural School and Community Trust
- Rural School and Community Trust
The Rural School and Community Trust (Rural Trust) is a national nonprofit organization addressing the crucial relationship between good schools and thriving communities. Their mission is to help rural schools and communities get better together.
Working in some of the poorest, most challenging places, the Rural Trust involves young people in learning linked to their communities, improves the quality of teaching and school leadership, and advocates in a variety of ways for appropriate state educational policies, including the key issue of equitable and adequate funding for rural schools.
Publications
In addition to a variety of reports, toolkits, and other publications discussing such topics as good rural high schools, place-based learning, small schools and consolidation, No Child Left Behind, school funding, and school evaluation, the Rural Trust has three periodical publications:
*"Why Rural Matters" is a biannual report detailing a state-by-state assessment of rural education in the United States.
*"Rural Roots" is a monthly e-mail publication featuring a variety of resources for practitioners including case studies, upcoming events, and funding opportunities.
*"Rural Policy Matters" is a monthly publication available in both print and e-mail formats detailing a variety of rural education policy and funding news and issues.
History
The Annenberg Rural Challenge was founded in July 1995 when a grant of $46.75 million was given by the Annenberg Challenge to study and implement school reform across rural America [http://www.annenberginstitute.org/challenge/about/about_2.html#awards] . The Rural Challenge in turn gave hundreds of grants to rural communities across America. In 1999, the Annenberg Rural Challenge transitioned from grantmaking to improving student learning and strengthening community life through advocacy, research, and publications [http://foundationcenter.org/pnd/spotlight/spotlight.jhtml;jsessionid=XNAYA3SUCCB4PTQRSI4CGXD5AAAACI2F?id=19600033] .
