It is a shrub or small tree reaching up to 8 meters in height. It is distributed in lowland and lower montane forests from 35º to 42º south latitude. On the
South Island it grows west of the divide.
*"P. colorata" is an evergreen shrub or small tree commonly known as the Pepperwood(Due to its leaves having a very hot bite to them) or mountain horopito, 1 to 2.5 meters high, with yellow and green leaves blotched with red, and bright red new leaves in the spring. It is widespread across New Zealand, from lowland forests to higher montane forests, and from 36º 30' south latitude southward toStewart Island .
*"P. traversii" is a compact shrub, to 1 meter in height. Its distribution is limited to the northwest corner of the South Island, from Collingwood to Westport.
