Lithuanian Tribunal

Lithuanian Tribunal

Lithuanian Tribunal ( _pl. Trybunał Litewski) was the highest appeal court for the bajorai of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was the counterpart to the Crown Tribunal of the Crown of the Polish Kingdom, on which it was based. The Lithuanian Tribunal was created by the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Stefan Batory, three years after the creation of the Crown Tribunal in 1578. Its sessions were first held in Vilnius as it was headquartered in the present-day Cathedral Square, but after 1599, the setting was alternated between Minsk and Navahrudak. After the First Partition of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the location was briefly changed to Hrodna. The Tribunal met every two years and was in session for five months.
