"Leader of the Band" is a song written by Dan Fogelberg in tribute to his musician father.

The song first appeared in the album "The Innocent Age", released in October 1981. Released as a single at the end of the year, it did quite well, climbing to number 9 on the "Billboard" Hot 100 chart. [Whitburn, Joel (1996). "The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits", 6th Edition (Billboard Publications)] It became Fogelberg's second #1 song on the "Billboard" adult contemporary chart, following his 1980 hit "Longer". [Hyatt, Wesley (1999). "The Billboard Book of #1 Adult Contemporary Hits" (Billboard Publications)]

Lucie Arnaz performs a version of the song as a tribute to her late father, Desi Arnaz.
