Bruce Kapferer (b. 1940(?) in
Sydney ) is anAustralia nsocial anthropologist .He was raised in
Sydney , and studiedanthropology at theUniversity of Sydney . Having done field research inKabwe (Zambia ), he went on to theUniversity of Manchester to study withMax Gluckman , and received his PhD in 1969. After years of teaching at Manchester, he founded the anthropology department at theUniversity of Adelaide with fellow MancunianKingsley Garbett . Together they founded the journal "Social Analysis ". He is currentlyprofessor ofsocial anthropology at theUniversity of Bergen ,Norway .Kapferer's research interests span from
Africa toAsia , and includeritual , thematically healing systems and folk drama,Buddhist cosmology ,ethnic identity ,nationalism andviolence , urban politics and ecological systems.Academic Positions
