Amalia Wilhelmina (21 April, 1673 – 10 April, 1742) was the daughter of John Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and Benedicta-Henrietta of Simmern.
Maternal ancestry
Her maternal grandparents were Edward, Count Palatine of Simmern and Anna Gonzaga.
Anna was a daughter of Charles I, Duke of Mantua and Catherine of Lorraine.
Catherine was a daughter of Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne and Henriette of Savoy, Marquise de Villars.
Holy Roman Empress
On 24 February 1699, she married Joseph, King of the Romans and heir of the Emperor Leopold I. Upon Joseph's election as Emperor in 1705, she became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire.
She bore three children: Maria Josepha, Leopold Joseph, who died at less than a year of age, and Maria Amalia, who was later Empress herself.
Amalia Wilhelmina outlived her husband by more than 30 years, dying on 10 April 1742. She is buried in the Salesian convent in Vienna. Her heart is buried in the Imperial Crypt.
