dens=47|Peille (Occitan: "Pelha") is a commune perched on a rock between
Monaco andMenton in theAlpes Maritimes department in southeasternFrance .It overlooks the
River Peillon . Higher still than the village are the ruins of achâteau dating from the13th century .It is thought the area was once home to a little know Ligurian
tribe theOratelli of Peille [About the Principality of Monaco] Today the village is notable for its narrow streets, small squares, and architecture dating to theMedieval period [Peille] . Examples of this architecture include the remnants of the village fortifications, the14th century courthouse known as the "Palais des Consuls". On the very edge of the cliff face is a large building known as the "Palais des Lascaris" this too dates from the 14th century. The village has a12th century church in the Romanesque style with ancientfresco s decorating its interior.The village is close to the Peille-Laghet
fault trace and on the 1st November 1999 was the epicentre of the smallPeille earthquake which measured (M [w] = 3.4) [CAT.INIST.FR]Notes
