vanRiemsdyk attended Christian Brothers Academy in
Lincroft, New Jersey before transferring out after his sophomore year to move toAnn Arbor, Michigan to play for USA NDT. In his final high school game for CBA he scored the game winning goal in overtime to defeat theDelbarton School and star goaltender Michael D'Urso in the 2005 Parochial state championship. In 2006–07, he scored 33 goals and 30 assists for the US Under-18 National Team,and represented the United States at the2007 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships inSweden . vanRiemsdyk was drafted second overall by thePhiladelphia Flyers in the2007 NHL Entry Draft . Fellow AmericanPatrick Kane went first overall marking the first time in NHL history that two Americans were drafted 1st and 2nd overall in the same draft.He had a great showing at the 2008 World Juniors where he led the entire tourney in scoring with 5 goals and 6 assists. The USA did not medal despite his efforts.
