Gallery Homeland

Gallery Homeland

galleryHOMELAND is a non profit art organization and art space located in southeast Portland, Oregon, United States. Founded in 2005 by Paul Middendorf and Paige Saez, galleryHOMELAND exhibits contemporary art by regional, national, and international artists.

At the end of 2007, galleryHOMELAND opened a new exhibition space at the Ford Building in the SE on Division Street and 11th Avenue. Artists and groups based both in and outside the region use several thousand square feet of project space for the creation and exhibition of artworks. As part of the Central Eastside Arts District, the gallery is connected to Portland’s art community that has formed between the industrial corridor and residential districts of the SE. Newly renovated, the Ford Building is currently home to over 50 professional artists, companies, and organizations. galleryHOMELAND is currently directed by artist and curator Paul Middendorf.

Art Exchange

galleryHOMELAND’s Art Exchange creates exposure for regional artists throughout the world as well as providing Portland with international and national contemporary art.

Through partnerships with galleries and organizations, galleryHOMELAND provides regional artists the opportunity to expand their professional exposure in the arts. By exporting regional art to exhibitions, art fairs, and events throughout the world, galleryHOMELAND creates recognition for Portland’s artists within contemporary international art. galleryHOMELAND’s Art Exchange also brings artworks and projects from other cities and countries to Portland.

Artist Residency

galleryHOMELAND’s Aubrey Baer Artist Residency provides international and national visual artists the opportunity to live, work, and exhibit in Portland.

Under artist and professor Harrell Fletcher at Portland State University, galleryHOMELAND co-founder Paige Saez began an artist’s residency program. She began inviting artists and art-related groups to come live and create work for one month in Portland.

Now under the direction of Paul Middendorf, the Artist Residency continues to bring contemporary artists to Portland. Residents receive room and board, a stipend, and an exhibition of their work. Through participation in lectures, panel discussions, and exhibition events, participants are introduced to Portland. galleryHOMELAND provides participants the opportunity to develop relationships with Portland curators, gallerists, critics, and artists.

To date galleryHOMELAND has brought six artists into Portland with 2008 marking the first international resident to participate. The Artist Residency continues to expand its scope; in 2009 galleryHOMELAND will begin exporting Portland artists to reside in other cities and create work.

Exhibitions and Art Events

galleryHOMELAND shows Portland artists nationally and internationally, as well as producing Lifeboat-Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach, Lifeboat-Hamptons for Scope Art Fair Hamptons, and Waterways, an Istanbul Biennale project.
