Hayao Miyazaki worked as a storyboard artist and key animator on the film. Miyazaki also wrote the manga adaptation, which was serialized in Chūnichi Shinbun Nichiyō Ban (Chunichi Newspaper Sunday Version). The main character, Pero the cat is the mascot of Toei Animation. Pero's name is shortened from Perrault.
It was followed by two sequels, nihongo|Three Musketeers in Boots|ながぐつ三銃士|Nagagutsu Sanjūshi (1972) and nihongo|Puss 'n Boots Travels Around the World|長靴をはいた猫 80日間世界一周|Nagagutsu o Haita Neko: Hachijū Nichikan Sekai Isshū (1976).
Discotek has released an English language version on DVD along with the original Japanese with English subtitles and a music and effects track.
