Parvocellular part

Parvocellular part

The parvocellular ("small-celled") part of a nucleus in the brain is one containing small-bodied, punctate neurons. The term distinguishes it from a corresponding magnocellular part, containing larger cells. Phylogenetically, parvocellular neurons are more modern than magnocellular ones.

Optic system

The parvocellular neurons of the optic system project from the retinal ganglion cells to the Lateral geniculate nucleus. These optic parvocellular neurons are sensitive to color and more capable of discriminating fine details than their magnocellular counterparts; they have greater spatial resolution, but lower temporal resolution, than their magnocellular counterparts.
