Suta

Suta

Suta is the name of a class of people mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. Sutas were the children of two parents of different castes. They were one of the castes that sprang from inter-mixing of the four castes of ancient India, by way of the Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and a Sudra. The foster-parents of Karna, a great hero of Kurukshetra War, were Sutas. Hence Karna too was considered as a Suta. Kichaka the commander of Matsya army was a Suta.

The two main occupation of Sutas as per epic Mahabharata were:
# story telling
# chariot-driving

The entire Mahabharata was narrated by a Suta named Ugrasrava Sauti and was made popular in ancient India by many other story telling Sutas like him.
