- Lin Chao
Professor Lin Chao is a Chinese Brazilian American
evolutionary biologist andgeneticist . Professor Chao gained hisPhD in1977 from theUniversity of Massachusetts ,Amherst , as a student of Bruce R. Levin (now atEmory University ), and was aNIH postdoctoral fellow atPrinceton University in the laboratory of Edward C. Cox. He spent most of his career in the Department of Biology of theUniversity of Maryland, College Park and is currently at theEcology , Behavior and Evolution Section of theUniversity of California, San Diego .Professor Chao is best known for his early work on the evolution of
bacteriocins [http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/abstract/78/10/6324] , his demonstration ofMuller’s ratchet in theRNA Virus Phi-6 [http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v348/n6300/abs/348454a0.html] and his work on sex in viruses [http://www.genetics.org/cgi/content/abstract/147/3/953] . More recently, he was instrumental in the demonstration of the evolution of parasitic particles in co-infectingbacteriophages [http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v398/n6726/abs/398441a0.html] [http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0033-5770(200009)75%3A3%3C261%3AKSAPEH%3E2.0.CO%3B2-B#abstract] and experimental tests ofFisher’s geometric model [http://www.genetics.org/cgi/content/abstract/151/3/921] . He argued that "life isevolution bynatural selection " [http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0006-3568(200003)50%3A3%3C245%3ATMOL%3E2.0.CO%3B2-0] . The approach generally used in his laboratory is called microbialexperimental evolution .Professor Chao is married to Camilla Rang, a fellow scientist, T-shirt designer and Swedish children's book author.
