Emmanuel School of Religion is a graduate theological
seminary located nearJohnson City, Tennessee . It was founded in 1965 in conjunction withMilligan College , to which it maintains a close, though fraternal relationship. The seminary is located on a hill overlooking the Milligan Campus.The school offers three degrees--the Master of Arts in Religion (M.A.R.), the Master of Divinity (M.Div.), and the Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree. It is accredited by the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and theAssociation of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada to award masters and doctoral degrees. Support for the school comes largely fromChristian Churches and Churches of Christ throughout the United States, as well as some congregations of the Disciples of Christ and theChurches of Christ .Emmanuel has a reputation for preparing students for further academic work, especially for studies toward terminal degrees in theology and philosophy, but has made strides in recent years toward strengthening its program of practical preparation for congregational ministry. The vast majority of its graduates serve in preaching ministry, campus ministry, teaching ministry, or missions among ministries, congregations, and institutions of the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ.
The campus includes three main buildings. The B.D. Phillips Memorial Building houses the library, classrooms, administration offices, chapel, and an auditorium. It was built in 1971. The Algrhim Carriage House houses the physical plant and storage. The Emmanuel Village, the student housing complex, includes more than 30 townhouse apartments for students, and the Thompson Community Center, a gathering place for the student body, guest housing for visitors, and the Emmanuel Institutes. The whole campus overlooks the Milligan College campus and the
Appalachian Mountains .The student body is roughly 120 students, mostly pursuing masters degrees, and mostly coming from the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, though an increasing number of
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) ,Baptist , andUnited Methodist students have studied there in recent years.The school's unofficial mascot is the Emmanuel Emu.
