First Peoples' Heritage, Language and Culture Council

The First Peoples’ Heritage, Language and Culture Council is a Crown Corporation of the province of British Columbia, Canada.

The First Peoples' Council has been offering services and programs to support First Nations' language, arts, and culture revitalization in British Columbia since 1990. With a growing international reputation, the organization is now the go-to organization for B.C. First Nations' arts, languages and cultures.

The mandate of the organization is to:

* Provide funding to First Nations' cultural and language programs.
* Support and advise government and First Nations' leadership on initiatives, programs and services related to First Nations' arts, language and culture.
* Provide services and resources to help revitalize the cultural legacy of First Nations' people.
* Advocate for First Nations' heritage and culture.

The organization has developed resources for First Nations' communities including arts and language online tool kits and an internationally recognized FirstVoices language archiving system. FirstVoices offers an interactive language tutor system and the ability for language learners to download First Nations' languages to an iPod. The program supports communities in language and culture documentation, archiving and teaching using online software technology.

In 2008, the organization partnered with Telus to produce 225 short video clips demonstrating "verbs in action." The 5-8 second clips will be uploaded to the FirstVoices website to assist language learners by providing a moving visual representation of phrases such as "pouring water" or "digging in the sand" in their own Indigenous languages.

Also in 2008, the organization started offering three new programs: Language and culture camps that create an opportunity for First Nations' families, Elders, youth and children to be immersed in their languages and cultures; "language nests" to provide language and cultural immersion for young children and their families; and a three-year master-apprentice program that partners Elders with committed learners so they can become fluent in their original language.

The First Peoples' Council arts program supports the development of First Nations artists and arts organizations through mentorship, workshops, and organizational capacity building initiatives.

The organization is based in Brentwood Bay, B.C.
